Checkpoint Charlie is a guard
shelter in Vail, Colorado where
local law enforcement curb automotive activity in Vail's pedestrian,
shopping, and restaurant district.
Art In Public Places of the Town of Vail concluded a new facade was
needed on a dilapidated Charlie for the high profile 1999 World Alpine
Championships activities.
Nine local artists and architects were asked to present a structural
improvement plan, of which one was accepted: Avant Palette. Included
in the makeover was re-staining the roofing, repainting and glazing
the preexisting wood paneling, creation of a town coat of arms, Village
map, Swiss shutters, doors, fauxed vines, and custom lettering.
