SAN DIEGO ARTISTS COLLABORATE ON INVENTIVE CEILING MURAL
Impressionistic Koi Pond Created by Margarette Johannes and Mario Torero
SAN DIEGO, November 5, 2009—Avant Palette, San Diego’s premier finishing company, announced today that its principal, Margarette Johannes, in collaboration with renowned San Diego muralist Mario Torero, has completed an elaborate 20x15-foot koi pond ceiling mural for a client in suburban Poway. As the homeowners and their guests enjoy meals in the dining room, fantastic koi are also eating in the dynamic impressionistic artwork above them, surrounded by vibrant lily pads, papyrus, turtles and a burst of sunlight.
“It was extremely fulfilling to work with another artist, especially one as talented as Mario Torero,” Johannes said. “The complexity of our points of view resulted in a monumental piece that frankly exceeded even my own high expectations.”
Johannes researched koi—at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute and Balboa Park’s koi pond—to ensure the most realistic outcome. Since the homeowners wanted the view to be from under the pond, she had to become familiar with what koi look like from the bottom…and hard as she looked, she couldn’t find any images of koi bellies. Other challenges included dealing with the concave shape of the ceiling and finishing the project in just seven days, while the homeowners were out of town, instead of the probable three weeks it might have taken.
“We worked long and hard so we could provide the client with a huge surprise when they returned home…and they were ecstatic,” Johannes said.
